Last year, as people across the country were struggling with economic and social hardships, I observed that many amature and professional artists alike were creating and showing attention-catching artwork of storms or water, wherein people were often depicted in water as submerged or attempting to surface.
Art serves to illustrate the state of the human condition. It can bring to attention an individual or national situation, and I always take note when certain themes unexplainedly trend or proliferate and share a similar message in concept. Artists are the voice of humanity and art communicates what we feel, who we are, and where we feel we are going.
This particular artwork was made during great changes to my own life. It was created out of admiration for the pioneers who braved the turbulent seas to start a radically new way of life for themselves and their posterity.
